Mylar Stencil Guide – Which Mylar Sheets Should I Use?

Sign making has became popular over the past few years. Mainly due to the popularity of hobby vinyl cutting machines, such as the Cricut models, and the Silhouette models. – LinkedGo Mylar Stencil will be happy

I feel overwhelmed with all of the differences between LinkedGo Mylar Stencil Sheets, what thickness you should use with each one of them.

Many of these crafters that are creating signs end up using Mylar stencil and adhesive or heat transfer vinyl. A lot of these crafters are beginner sign makers and are intimidated by paint and wood working. While this isn’t the “wrong” way to create a sign, in my opinion, it isn’t the way to achieve the highest quality signs. However, there is no right or wrong way. It all comes down to user preference.

Blank mylar can be used for cutting your own stencils and for may different uses. This material has great properties:

  • This extremely tough and hard to rip material.
  • It is flexible so that it can be rolled and will conform to curved surfaces.
  • Dimensionally stable so that it does not stretch and will keep its shape.
  • It is translucent so that you can see contrast through it allowing perfect placement for stencils.
  • Paint does not like to stick to it so it is easy to clean.

What do you need LinkedGo Mylar Stencil Sheets?

Before I got the Mylar Stencil sheets, I have never understood why there are different thickness of sheets, if you don’t know what stencil sheets does like me, this is a interesting thing for you to know.

LinkedGo proud to offer the highest quality stencil material available, authentic Mylar sheets. 4 mil, 6 mil, 10 mil Mylar sheets in 12″ x 12″ size sheets. We know how tough it can be to find the right material that will be the same consistent quality you expect. You’re guaranteed to receive authentic Mylar at the desired thickness every time you order with no exceptions. Our material is incredibly durable yet flexible enough for a variety of applications.

4 Mil Mylar Stencil Sheets

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Blank-Stencil-Sheets-4mil-300x300.jpg

4 mil Mylar : All of the mylars make great stencils. We recommend 4 mil for DIY stencils as they cut easily and still make an effective stencil for most uses. 4 mil cuts easily with a scalpel knife. We also recommend 4 mil for electric cutters like Cricuts and Silhouettes.

From interior decorating to logos and crests, to face painting, to small industrial projects, it’s as easy as drawing your design on, cutting, and painting on any surface you like!

This mylar is a glossy material specifically engineered for easy cutting with a pen or exacto knife. With a material this thin, any design you come up with will produce crisp lines that pop right out off of your surface. We recommend brushing or rolling your paint on with this material for optimum line definition.

Great for arts and crafts, custom lettering, signs, designs, and more. Make sure your stencil is cut with adequate bracing, and leave room on the edges for excess paint. Easy to clean? You bet. Just add a little soap and water or paint remover to the stencil material and watch as the paint comes right off.

6 Mil Mylar Stencil Sheets

It has both flexibility and durability. It will conform to rounded surfaces easily. light and easily attached to vertical surfaces with our repositionable adhesive spray, cut with a firm manual knife or gyro cutter. Our experience is that consumer grade electric cutters like a Cricut do not cut this material consistently We recommend 6 mil for repeat 2 cuts. Ideal for various diy projects: drawing & drafting, art journals, kids craft, home decor, painting wall, wood, fabric signs.

Change pressure to 330 and number of passes to 2. Fine cut blade and standard grip mat. Works like a charm! Once you edit the settings they will remain as your default settings anytime you choose

10 Mil Mylar Stencil Sheets

10 mil mylar makes a great stencil. the material is very durable but still is flexible enough to conform to curved surfaces and light enough to use easily on vertical surfaces. It also allows a very high degree of detail.

However it is more difficult to cut. Most consumer grade electric cutters cannot cut this material, ( the new Cricut Maker is the exception.) If cutting by hand, we recommend a heated stencil cutting tool.

This material is light enough for applying to vertical and horizontal surfaces. (Use our Repositionable Spray to attach to a wall while stenciling.) Great for arts and crafts, custom lettering, signs, designs, and more. Make sure your stencil is cut with adequate bracing, and leave room on the edges for excess paint.

FAQ – Common Questions

WHAT IS MYLAR MADE OF AND WHAT ARE ITS PROPERTIES?
Mylar is a polyester film (or PET) that is used for a variety of industrial applications. It can handle temperatures of -10F to 300F and has a resistance to most chemicals. We can provide a full spec sheet upon request.

CAN THESE STENCIL BLANKS BE USED IN A LASER CUTTER?
Of course! This is the exact material we use for our stencils here at Stencil Revolution. We’ve tried a variety of materials and found that Mylar is by far the best performing and best looking stencil material available. There is little to no discoloration from cuts and the material reacts great with the laser resulting in minimal melt. This helps us create precision cut stencils that our customers love.

WHAT ABOUT HAND CUTTING AND DIY PROJECTS?
With a sharp Xacto knife you can cut this material no problem. You can also draw on it before hand with a marker to trace your design.

IS IT WASHABLE?
Yes with soap and water it can be wash very easily. That is the beauty of this material, since it is resistant to most chemicals it can handle a variety of paints and cleaners.

HOW DURABLE IS MYLAR? HOW FLEXIBLE IS IT?
Without a knife or pair of scissors you aren’t cutting these blank mylar sheets. With a sharp blade it can be cut fairly easy but you will need to replace blades quite often to get a smooth cut. It’s also very flexible for bending around different surfaces such as a glass or bottles for etching.

WHAT ABOUT ADHESIVE BACKED, ACETATE, MAGNETIC STENCIL MATERIAL?
We’re not big fans of adhesive backed since it’s only a one time use. This really defeats the purpose of a good stencil. A great alternative is to just use an adhesive spray which can be removed after use. For customers who need to apply the stencil to metal quickly, there are adhesive back magnets which can be attached at each corner of the stencil. Then acetate is just a low quality material we refuse to work with.

I have been making projects with my Cricut and using Cricut Design Space for a couple years now. Cricut fonts like a cat lady loves cats.

I tend to be fairly minimalistic, but the font folder on my computer suggests otherwise.

Lucky for all of us Cricut has added a lot of new ones ! I combed through all of them to share with YOU my very favorite fonts in Cricut Design Space, and organized them into categories; script fonts, bold fonts, font pairings, and some of the best fonts for monograms!

What are Cricut Font?

Cricut fonts are fonts that are built into the CDS software. They are designed specifically for Cricut machines. Therefore, when you use one of Cricut’s fonts, you will get a clean and beautiful cut every time.

You can add your monogram to just about anything! I’ve seen it on luggage, tumblers and water bottles, sweatshirts, keychains and more. I made these monogram keychains for guests at a baby sprinkle earlier this month. You can see how I did it here.

Ideally, you will read this tutorial from the beginning, because as we go, we will be implementing the concepts mentioned in the previews steps.

Are you ready?

Let’s Daydream Into Reality!

How To Design You Monogram In Cricut Design Space?

Let’s jump into how to make your own monogram for free!

Step 1 – Download the MONOGRAMOS font from here (it’s free).

Step 2 – Install font on your computer. NOTE make sure you do not have Design Space open when you install your font or it won’t show up in Design Space.

To install your font after you’ve downloaded it, open up the font zip folder, therefore click the OpenType Font File and click INSTALL in the top left corner.

Cricut Design Space Fonts

Step 3 – Open Cricut Design Space, add text and add the first letter of your monogram. “MAKE NOTE OF THE FONT SIZE OF YOUR DESIGN”

Step 4 – Add a square and resize around the second two letters in the monogram, select all and slice the second to letters out of the design, and last remove all excess letters and pieces so only the first letter is left.

Step 5 – Add text and add the second letter of your monogram. Make sure it is the SAME TEXT SIZE as the first monogram letter. Add a square and resize around the first letter of the design, select all and slice the first letter out of the design, at last, remove square and two sliced first letters.

Step 6 – In the same way, we add the last letter “Y”, therefore remove all excess letters and pieces so only the last letter is left, line up all letters of monogram and align center vertically, at last select all and attach.

Step 7 – You can now change the size of your monogram to fit whatever you are putting it on.

Are you new to Cricut and wondering how to start in Design Space? When I first got a Cricut and started using CDS (Cricut Design Space), I was overwhelmed, to say the least. I had never really used a design program before.

When it comes to getting started with a Cricut machine and the Design Space software it can be daunting trying to figure out what all the functions and terms.

Even though you are anxious to use all those wonderful craft materials, before jumping into tutorials it can be helpful to familiarize yourself with all the terminology that Cricut uses.

The purpose of this article is to teach you and show you an overview of every Icon, and Panel of the Cricut Design Space Canvas Area. The canvas is the Design Space graphic work space where you will design and arrange your vectors or prints and access all the tools.

Lower Right Corner of CDS:

  • Slice – Cut images out of others or slice objects. Use to make split letter monograms.
  • Attach – Attach text or images so they cut out exactly as you have them on your canvas
  • Weld – Weld cursive text so it is one continuous line and no tails are cut. Weld objects to turn into one object.
  • Contour – Delete inside or outside of images or unwanted lines.
  • Flatten – Flatten your image together to print it

Upper Right Corner of CDS:

  • Layers Panel – See all the different layers of your images. Click the eye to hide or unhide certain layers.

12 x 10 Inches: This is the Jumbo size and is deal for those large big projects such as large T-Shirts, Hoodies, and large projects.

How the Cricut Easypress works

To power up the device, all you have to do is press the power button to the left of the display. With the device on, you need to find a firm, flat and heat-resistance surface. With the pressing surface in place, set the timer and temperature to match your project needs.

To adjust the timer button, use the +/- buttons to specify the desired heating time for your iron-on project. Upon pressing the temperature button, the machine will begin to heat up; use the +/- buttons to either increase or decrease temperature. Note that the Cricut device displays an orange color when adjusting the temperature and will turn green once the desired setting is achieved.

It usually takes roughly two minutes and five seconds for the device to heat up from 0 to 400°F. The device will automatically beep to signal it is ready for use. Place your shirt or other base material on top of a silicone foam mat and pre-heat it for 3 to 5 seconds to eliminate wrinkles. Place your vinyl design on the base material. Remove the Easypress 2 from its base and it directly on the vinyl decal.

Then press the green Cricut button to initiate the timer. Hold the machine in place and apply gentle pressure while pressing until the device beeps. Remember to keep the machine still during the entire process. With the pressing complete, return the press back to its stand then wait for the liner to cool down before removing it from the heat transfer vinyl.

Gift for a teacher

What gift does your teacher want most ?

Teacher gifts! when teacher week is around…I like to shower those teachers with some amazing teacher appreciation gifts. I’ve said it once…and I will probably say it about 200 more times. It takes a special person to be a teacher.

and when I went in on Holidays to pick up my daughter… I saw about 15 bath and body works soaps and lotions on the teachers’s desk! And I thought…surely they has to got to be a better gift! So I asked all the teachers I know (and some I didn’t know…thanks facebook!) and I’ve got the top 4 gifts that teachers ACTUALLY want!

Here is what they said they get a lot of:

Soaps, lotions, chapsticks, hot cocoa mugs, and socks (not that these are necessarily bad things…but all things in moderation!!!

Personalized teacher gifts

“We spend lots of time getting to know the kids in our class…so it’s fun when they get to know us as well” the teacher said the sweetest thing.

These getting to know you surveys are awesome! Give one to your teacher and you have gifts that will last you all year long!!!

Teacher Questionnaire

Teacher Surveys

Sometimes, I struggle with teacher gifts. I want to make something all adorable and cute…but then, I’m all, “wouldn’t they rather just have a Target gift card to get what they want?”. To solve this several year dilemma, this year I plan to ask them to fill in this simple survey to give me an idea of all of their favorite things

Cricut mats

Cricut Mats Guide – Which Cricut Mat Should I Use?

I felt so confused when I first got my Cricut.

I feel overwhelmed with all of the differences between Cricut Mats, what materials you should use with each one of them, and how to clean and care for them, you are in the right place.

The purpose of this article is to help you avoid the same doubts I had about the Cricut Mats and provide you with the right knowledge about them. If you read this article, you will be a PRO!

cricut mats on cricut air explore

Today we are going to tackle one of the most frequently asked Cricut questions, let’s learn what a Cricut Mat is and which ones are available.

Cricut makes 4 different mats to use with their Explore Air machines: Cricut® LightGrip Cutting Mat, Cricut® StandardGrip Cutting Mat, Cricut® StrongGrip Cutting Mat, and the Cricut® FabricGrip Cutting Mat.

Each of these mats is used to cut many different types of materials (from lightweight materials like printer paper and washi tape sheets to heavyweight materials like faux leather and corrugated cardboard). If you don’t use the correct mat for your project, you risk running your materials and then have a tough time removing them from the mat.

What do you need Cricut Mats?

Many people wonder if mats are needed for all our DIY projects.

Well, the answer is yes, you will always need to use a mat for each project. This is because every material you cut needs to be stable and solid on the surface; otherwise it will move, which is the source of the disaster.

Before I got the Cricut Mat, I have never understood why there are different colors of mats, if you don’t know what Mat does like me, this is a interesting thing for you to know.

4 different cricut mats
  • StrongGrip Mat (Purple): Provide a strong adhesive surface perfect for securing heavyweight materials. such as thick cardstock, specialty cardstock, magnet material, chipboard etc
  • LightGrip Mat (Blue): It is specially formulated for lightweight materials, such as office paper, pearl paper, printer paper, vellum, vinyl, washi sheets etc.
  • StandardGrip Mat (Green): Perfect for a wide range of medium-weight materials, such as cardstock, printable iron-on, pearl paper, vellum, printer paper, window cling, printable fabric etc.
  • Fabric Mat (Pink): Made from higher-quality, higher-density PVC to withstand the increased pressure of the Rotary Blade

You have the option of either purchasing the 12 x 12″ Cricut Mat or the larger 12×24″ Cricut Mat. Both of these sized mats work in all the Air Explore Machines as well as the Cricut Maker machine. So sizing is truly dependent on the size of the projects that you will be working on.

Here is a quick explanation of the mats, their grip and the material you should be using with them:

StrongGrip Mat (Purple)

The StrongGrip mat is brilliant for heavyweight materials.

You need the strong sticky grip in order to keep the thicker material as the machines have to apply more pressure to cut through these materials.

  • Glitter cardstock
  • Specialty cardstock
  • Magnet material
  • Chipboard
  • Poster board

LightGrip Mat (Blue)

The blue LightGrip Cutting Mat has just enough sticky grip to hold material firmly in place during cutting, yet it allows for easy removal of the lighter weight material when you are finished cutting.

  • office paper
  • cardstock
  • light cardstock
  • construction paper
  • printable iron-on

StandardGrip Mat (Green)

StandardGrip Cutting mat is perfect for cutting medium-weight materials, and it also has the perfect amount of grip that makes for easy removal of your material.

  • Vinyl
  • Pearl Paper
  • Vellum
  • Printer Paper

Fabric Mat (Pink)

The pink FabricGrip mat has specially been created to allow those with a Cricut Maker to cut through even the thinnest of materials without the need for fabric stabilizer, just on its own with the Rotary blade and the Cricut Maker.

  • Bonded fabric
  • Any type of fabric with the rotary blade

Where can I buy Cricut Mats?

I am pretty sure that every craft store has them on hand. Plus I am quite busy and going to the store is not an option for me. However, I always buy these products online so I can compare prices.

When I first got my Cricut, I got this pack on amazon because It has all four mats.

It’s always a good idea to check out the Official Cricut website. They have everything and sometimes outstanding deals.

How to care for and clean my Cricut mat?

Taking good care of your mat is very important to ensure that your cuts are always nice and smooth.

We have published such an article in the previous post. Check out the method here.

Cricut-or-Silhouette

Cricut Explore Air 2 vs Silhouette Cameo 3 Should I Buy

When you buy the first cutting machine (exciting!), do you want to know which one of the silhouette and Cricut is right for you? You can find the right place here.

I’ll break down everything about the Cricut Explore Air 2 , including how it differs from the Silhouette Cameo 3 model.

What is it exactly that makes this craft cutting a crowd favorite?

Let’s explore.

Cricut Explore Air 2
Cricut Explore Air 2

About the Cricut Explore Air 2

The Cricut Explore Air 2 was released in late 2016, it is a great machine for most people. It’s a good value and 2x fast mode to cut at twice the speed of the previous model. I think it’s the best-designed cutter on the market: it looks stunning and is a pleasure to use.

If you want to go straight to the best deals and bundles, give that a click to head down to the bottom of this review where I’ve collected those for you.

Key features of the Cricut Explore Air 2

The Cricut Explore Air 2 comes with the standard Fine-Point Blade, and it’s compatible with the Deep Point Blade and the Bonded Fabric Blade (sold separately). With these tools, you can cut over a hundred different types of material including:

  • vinyl
  • paper
  • foam sheets
  • chipboard
  • bonded fabrics
  • paper and vinyl, foam sheets and chipboard, to bonded fabric.

Here are three important features of the Cricut Explore Air 2:

2x fast mode. It has one major upgrade, which lets you cut thin materials like vinyl, paper, and cardstock at twice the speed. This is really helpful for people who make multiple copies of their projects (like teachers) or people who make things to sell who will appreciate the amount of time they save.

Built-in bluetooth capabilities. You can cut wirelessly and a double tool holder so you can cut and write all in a single pass. And like the Explore Air, the second clamp is compatible with accessories like the Scoring Stylus, Cricut Pens, etc. so there’s no need to purchase an additional adapter.

Cricut Explore Air 2
Smart Set Dial

Smart Set Dial. You can easily choose the material you’ll be cutting, and the Cricut will automatically select the appropriate cutting depth and speed. This takes a lot of the frustration and guesswork out of picking the cut settings and will end up saving you significant time and material.

Conclusion

It’s a gorgeous machine with useful features to make your cutting projects a success. Personally I don’t actually use Fast Mode all that often, but it can definitely save you time if you do a lot of cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on projects!

About the Silhouette Cameo 3

Cricut Explore Air 2

The Silhouette CAMEO® 3 was released in August 2016. The Cameo 3 represents the newest model from Silhouette’s best-selling Cameo line. At first review, it sits on the desk like a gorgeous, sleek printer. But instead of printing ink onto a page, the Cameo 3 can cut and draw on over 100 different types of material.

I’ll run through the newest features of this machine and the important pros and cons, and then I break down all of the Silhouette Cameo 3’s features in an easy-to-read format, so you can determine if it is the right cutting machine for you.

New machine design

If you’ve used the Cameo 2 before, you’ll notice that the biggest change with the Cameo 3 is that it’s, well, bigger! The Cameo 3 is longer, wider, and weighs more than the Cameo 2. it keep a clean and streamlined design, and it has an incredibly sleek look that looks fabulous sitting in your crafting area.

I think overall the Cameo 3 is definitely a more attractive model than the previous Cameo.

Features of Your Silhouette Cameo 3

(A) Storage

The Cameo 3 has multiple storage compartments. With your lid open, there are places to keep extra blades on the left. On the top rack, you can keep blades, tools, or pens, and the pull-out drawer at the bottom opens for more storage.

Cricut Explore Air 2
Improved storage

There is also a long, narrow tray above the dual carriage that is great for holding up to 12 sketch pens. (Really they all fit!)

(B) LCD Touchscreen

Cricut Explore Air 2
Touchscreen

With the touch screen, you can load your media and access your machine settings. The Cameo 3 is our first machine to feature sounds to help you navigate through the screens. The touchscreen now features a series of easily-accessible tutorials that help with those who are new to the Silhouette family, or to cutting machines in general.

(C) Adjustable Rollers

Silhouette Cameo 3
Adjustable Rollers

The Cameo 3 is the first Silhouette featuring new adjustable rollers. The spring rollers have been designed for a strong yet gentle way to hold project materials in place, it much easier adjustment mechanism, just twist and slide.

Now that I’ve gone over how the new Cameo looks and feels, let’s move on to how she cuts!

(D) Cameo 3 Cutting

If you are using a long piece of media, the crosscutter can be very helpful. It is basically a paper-cutter on the back of your machine. The crosscutter lets you separate your finished cut job from the remaining media in one quick stroke. With the crosscutter track attached directly to the back, you will get a perfectly straight edge every time. Then, when you use the remaining media for a different project, your Cameo will load the nice, even edge very easily. If you use rolls of vinyl, the crosscutter will be very helpful.

Cricut Explore Air 2

The Cameo is able to cut long materials because you don’t have to stick your material to a cutting mat to run it through the machine. This Silhouette can do matless cutting on lined media (like regular adhesive backed vinyl).

(E) Built-in Bluetooth

The Cameo 3 is the first Silhouette machine with Bluetooth capabilities, all other Cameo editions, Bluetooth® is enabled, but you will need to install a Bluetooth® adapter.

Cricut Explore Air 2

Bluetooth lets you connect wirelessly to your computer, iPad, iPhone, or Android device. With 100 foot range, you can set up your Silhouette anywhere you want, without being tethered to your computer. Use Bluetooth® to get some of those pesky cords out of the way!

(F) Dual Carriage

Cameo 3 features a dual carriage. Are you like us and are a little bit EXCITED about the project possibilities? The tools are marked with little red circle on the left and a blue circle on the right. Insert your tools (such as an AutoBlade and a sketch pen) into the corresponding tool holders assigned in your Send panel. Watch two different tools work in one cut job!

Silhouette Cameo 3
Dual Carriage

The tools compatible with the its dual carriage are:

  • AutoBlade. Automatically adjusts cut settings.
  • Standard Blade. AKA the ratchet blade.
  • Fabric Blade. Same as the standard blade, but in a different color to distinguish it for fabric-use only.
  • Premium Blade. Lasts 3x as long as the standard blade.
  • Deep-Cut Blade. Cuts materials up to 2mm thick.
  • Sketch Pens. 24 colors now come with now with 2x the ink.
  • Pen holder. Can hold 3 different sizes of pens and markers.

Conclusion

The Silhouette Cameo 3 is a solid machine, a great value, and the best Silhouette machine you can get today.
Unfortunately, Silhouette still has not improved on the mediocre cutting power of the Cameo series, so it can’t easily handle dense or tough materials.
If you want to cut long materials, the Silhouette Cameo 3 is a great choice.
